Escape SE 4WD in Shadow Black over charcoal black cloth, and it is not a bare SE. It was built with Equipment Group 201A, which adds the SE Convenience Package, rear parking sensors, black roof side rails, SYNC 3 with SYNC Connect, a cargo tonneau cover and a 10-way power driver seat, plus the twin panel moonroof. The window sticker came to $34,489. Kilometres are about average for a 2017, and it is certified and safety inspected. It suits a commuter or a small family in Ottawa, Kanata, Stittsville or Nepean who wants four-wheel drive and a few nice extras without paying new-car money.

Power comes from the 1.5L EcoBoost turbo four, 179 horsepower, with a six-speed SelectShift automatic and four-wheel drive, so it is easy on fuel during the week and sure-footed when the side streets have not been plowed. An engine block heater and heated wiper park come standard, which matter more in an Ottawa January than any brochure admits.

Inside there are heated front seats, dual-zone electronic climate, SYNC 3 with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SiriusXM, a reverse camera, a 60/40 split rear bench, power heated mirrors, fog lamps, privacy glass, MyKey and a keyless entry keypad. It is a sensible compact SUV with a few nice extras, not a luxury car, and it is priced accordingly.
