One of the most common questions we get is “how do I know this car is in good shape?” It’s a fair question. Buying used means trusting someone else’s maintenance habits, driving style, and honesty. At Orr Motors, we take that uncertainty off the table by putting every vehicle through a thorough inspection before it ever gets a price tag.
Here’s what that process actually looks like.
It Starts Before We Buy
Our Wholesale Manager, François, evaluates every vehicle before we commit to purchasing it. He reviews the service history, checks for accident reports, assesses mechanical condition, and confirms the vehicle’s market value. If something doesn’t add up, we walk away. Not every car makes the cut, and that’s by design.
The Multi-Point Inspection
Once a vehicle arrives at our shop, our service team goes through it systematically. Mishel, Adam, Tony, and Tyler each bring different strengths, but the process is consistent across every vehicle.
Under the Hood: Engine condition, fluid levels and quality, belts, hoses, battery health, and any signs of leaks or wear. We’re checking that the mechanical foundation is solid.
Brakes and Suspension: Pad thickness, rotor condition, caliper function, and the full suspension system including shocks, struts, bushings, and control arms. We check alignment and make sure nothing was knocked loose by Ottawa’s roads.
Drivetrain: Transmission performance, differential condition, CV joints and boots, and the exhaust system from manifold to tailpipe. If it’s AWD, we verify all four wheels are getting proper power.
Tires and Wheels: Tread depth, even wear patterns, sidewall condition, and tire age. Tires that are worn or mismatched get replaced before the car goes on the lot.
Electrical and Safety: All lights, signals, horn, power windows, locks, mirrors, and the full HVAC system. We test the battery, alternator, and starter. If the vehicle has advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring or backup cameras, we verify those are functioning correctly.
Interior and Exterior: We’re not just looking at cosmetics, though we address those too. We check for water damage, mould, unusual odours, frame integrity, and signs of poor previous repairs. Adam Coulas handles the detailing side, making sure every car looks its best when it hits the lot.
What Happens When We Find Something
If the inspection turns up an issue, we fix it. Period. We don’t sell vehicles with known problems and hope the buyer doesn’t notice. If a repair doesn’t make financial sense relative to the vehicle’s value, the car doesn’t go on the lot.
This is where being an independent dealership with our own service department makes a real difference. We’re not outsourcing inspections to a third party. Our techs know our standards because they work here every day.
Why This Matters
You can’t always see the condition of a car from a test drive. A vehicle can look great and still have worn brakes, a failing alternator, or tires that are five years past their prime. Our inspection process exists so that when you drive a car off our lot, you’re not inheriting someone else’s deferred maintenance.
Over 60 years of doing business in Stittsville, our reputation has been built on selling vehicles we’d put our own families in. The inspection process is how we back that up, every single time.
Want to see it for yourself? Stop by and we’ll walk you through any vehicle on the lot. We keep our inspection records and we’re happy to share them.
