Buying a used car is one of the biggest purchases you’ll make, and taking the time to inspect it properly can save you thousands down the road. Whether you’re shopping in Stittsville, Kanata, or anywhere across the Ottawa Valley, this checklist will help you spot potential issues before you sign.
Exterior Inspection
Walk around the vehicle slowly and look for inconsistencies. Check for mismatched paint, which could indicate previous bodywork. Run your fingers along panel gaps to feel for unevenness. Look underneath for rust, especially around wheel wells and rocker panels. Ottawa Valley roads and winter salt take a toll, so don’t skip this step. Check that all lights, including turn signals and brake lights, are functioning.
Under the Hood
Pop the hood and look for obvious issues. Check the oil dipstick for colour and level. Clean, amber-coloured oil is good. Dark, gritty oil or milky residue could signal engine problems. Inspect the coolant reservoir, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Look for signs of leaks around hoses and gaskets. Check the battery terminals for corrosion, which is common after harsh West Ottawa winters.
Interior Check
Sit in every seat. Test every switch, button, and knob. Roll all windows up and down. Turn on the heat and the A/C. Check the infotainment system, Bluetooth, and USB ports. Look for water stains on the headliner or carpet, which could indicate a leak. Sniff for musty smells that suggest mould or water damage.
Test Drive Essentials
A test drive should cover at least 20 minutes and include highway speeds, stops, and turns. Listen for unusual noises when braking, accelerating, or turning the wheel. Test the brakes at different speeds. Drive over a rough patch of road to check the suspension. Pay attention to how the transmission shifts, whether it’s smooth or jerky. If possible, drive on Highway 7 or the Queensway to test highway behaviour.
Documentation and History
Ask for the vehicle history report (CarFax or equivalent). Check for accident history, service records, and ownership count. Verify the VIN on the dashboard matches the registration. In Ontario, make sure the vehicle has a valid Safety Standards Certificate. Ask about any outstanding liens through a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP).
