Ottawa Valley roads are tough on vehicles. Between pothole season in spring, salt-coated highways in winter, and gravel back roads year-round, your car takes a beating. But with the right maintenance habits, there’s no reason a well-built used vehicle can’t hit 300,000 km and beyond. Here’s how to get there.
Stay on Top of Oil Changes
This is the single most important thing you can do for your engine. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended interval, but consider going more frequently if you do a lot of short trips around Stittsville or Kanata. Short drives don’t let the engine fully warm up, which causes more moisture and contaminant buildup in the oil. Synthetic oil holds up better in Ottawa’s temperature extremes.
Don’t Ignore the Transmission
Transmission fluid doesn’t last forever. Most manufacturers recommend changing it every 60,000 to 100,000 km, but many owners skip this because it’s out of sight. A fluid change is far cheaper than a transmission rebuild. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, check that the fluid is clean and red, not dark or burnt-smelling.
Protect Against Rust
This is non-negotiable in the Ottawa Valley. Road salt accelerates corrosion, especially on undercarriages, wheel wells, and brake lines. Get an annual rust-proofing treatment before winter hits. Wash the underside of your car regularly during salt season. Many West Ottawa car washes have undercarriage rinse options that help.
Keep Your Cooling System Healthy
Ottawa summers hit 35°C and winters drop below minus 30°C. Your cooling system works hard in both directions. Flush and replace the coolant according to schedule, and check the radiator, hoses, and thermostat for wear. An overheating engine can cause catastrophic damage in minutes.
Replace Wear Items Before They Fail
Brakes, tires, belts, and hoses all wear out gradually. Replace them proactively rather than waiting for failure. Worn brake pads can damage rotors, turning a $200 job into a $600 one. Bald tires on an icy Highway 7 morning are a safety risk. A cracked serpentine belt can leave you stranded on the side of March Road.
Use the Right Tires for the Season
In Ontario, winter tires aren’t legally required but they’re practically essential. Dedicated winter tires on a second set of rims make seasonal swaps easy and protect your all-seasons from cold-weather wear. Your insurance company may offer a discount for running winters too.
